Whip McCarthy's Statement on Hobby Lobby and Conestoga Wood Decision

Statement

Date: June 30, 2014
Location: Washington, DC

Majority Whip Kevin McCarthy (CA-23) released the following statement on the Supreme Court's ruling on the Obamacare Health and Human Services (HHS) mandate:

"Religious liberty is a fundamental principle of our country, which is why the First Amendment of our Constitution states boldly and clearly that Congress can make no law prohibiting the free exercise of religion. We've long known what the Supreme Court made clear today: that the Obamacare HHS mandate violates the Religious Freedom Restoration Act (RFRA), which protects the religious liberty of all Americans, by forcing people to buy for others what they are morally and religiously opposed to. The American people always retain their right to religious liberty, whether they employ others or not, and the HHS mandate clearly violated that right.

"The Supreme Court's decision today is a victory for our Constitutional principles and the fundamental human right of religious liberty."
